Like it or not, sometimes in life, you need to undergo surgery. Whether it’s for something a little scary like an emergency or an elective surgery you have chosen, like bariatric surgery, it’s no fun to be in hospital.
Your surgeon knows all the ins and outs of the process, however, and will be ready to assist you in any way possible.
The surgery itself falls to your medical team. Your recovery will fall to you, and that’s what we’re talking about here today. You can help yourself to recover faster by keeping a few things in mind in the weeks or even months post-surgery.
Let’s now dive into some of the most effective ways you can promote a speedy recovery after you’ve had surgery.
Rest, Rest, Rest
First up is rest, and we can’t stress enough the importance of taking it easy after your surgery. Sure, some exercise and regular movement are good and can even help to foster healing in your area of surgery, but try not to overexert yourself too soon after your procedure.
We understand that everyone takes to being laid up in the hospital for any length of time. However, if you try to get into too many activities too soon, you could end up harming yourself.
Instead, rest if your surgeon tells you to rest since your body needs a calm and safe environment to heal itself. The time to move will come soon enough. In fact, that leads us to another point.
Move Around
Standing opposite to the prescription to rest is the suggestion to move! Everything can be good in controlled, moderate amounts, and movement after surgery is no different.
In fact, not moving for long periods can cause you more issues, such as bedsores or muscle weakness. Think about how much you actually move throughout a regular day, from walking to your vehicle or into your office or just to the toilet.
These movements are good because they keep your blood flowing normally. Too much rest after surgery can become a bit too much for you, so, when you’re able, try to get some exercise in. Talk to your doctor to find out more about movement.
Wear a Compression Garment
Your surgeon might also recommend that you wear medical compression garments after your surgery. These garments can make all the difference in how you heal. They wrap tightly around your body and essentially squeeze everything.
Why?
Because the pressure wards away your red blood cells that would otherwise accumulate near the top layer of skin and cause bruising. The compression will also make you feel generally better, since you won’t be straining yourself and causing pain just by moving around; the incision will be held in place by the garment.
On top of that, the compression garments should reduce the amount of scarring you sustain, as well. The garments increase your post-surgery quality of life while still allowing you to heal under safe conditions.
As with anything relating to medicine, always talk to your doctor about what’s best for you after surgery. But we hope these tips have helped to give you some direction!
